Tonight sees the celebration of the annual AS Awards ceremony. One of our highlights of the year, a Christmas meet-up with friends and sporting heroes. This year however, with more of a focus on heroines, as a result of the tremendous collective success achieved by our girls we’ve dedicated the awards to them. Apart from our proposals, you have voted for Mireia Belmonte, Carolina Marín, the rhythmic gymnastic team, and as a future talent, Ángela Salvadores (basketball player). A huge congratulations to them and all those nominated who didn’t manage to win. This year has seen a great leap forward for women’s sport in Spain.
There is one figure-head amongst the prize winners, that of the amazing, Mireia Belmonte, who cannot stop winning medals and beating records. Alongside her achievements we have seen a positive surge forward in women's sport. Something that maybe we can track back to the success of the women’s basketball team, whose glories have managed to extend into other sports. We’ve been anxious to showcase these awards as an acknowledgement of a new era. A snapshot of a year that has seen incredible successes in women’s sport in Spain. This is a also a reflection of an improving society in general.
There is also a collective award, to the supporters of Real and Atlético Madrid during the Champions League final in Lisbon. Proof that football without ultra groups is possible and more desirable. For the first time, we award an AS America award to Pellegrini, a coach who won the English Premier League in his first season at Manchester City. A testament to his values and nobility as a coach. The Career Award goes to Carles Puyol, a legend with both Barça and with La Roja during some amazing years. Thanks to these great sportsmen and sportswomen we can publish a daily sports paper for you all to enjoy.
