Bale, the man of the finals

Another decisive match for a title, another final, and once again Gareth Bale appeared. In the 51st minute he received a pass from Isco between the lines and beat the San Lorenzo goalkeeper with his shot, not without the cooperation of Torrico, who was soft with his attempted save. It made it 2-0, it gave tranquillity to Real Madrid in the Club World Cup final and it was the goal that, most likely, clinched the title. And it was not the first time.

Since he arrived at Real Madrid, Bale has taken part in four single-match finals: the Copa del Rey, in Valencia against Barcelona; the Champions League, in Lisbon against Atlético; the European Super Cup; in his native Cardiff against Sevilla; and the Club World Cup, with San Lorenzo as the opponents. The Brit played a leading role in all of them, and he only finished one of those matches without scoring.

In Valencia he decided the match with a spectacular goal after that foraging run in which he left and returned to the field of play, burning past Bartra in the race and beating Pinto by placing the ball between his legs; in Lisbon, his header, after spectacular play from Di María, made it 2-1 and brought Madrid closer to the Décima; and in Marrakech he ended up knocking down San Lorenzo’s wall. And in the 64th minute he struck a cross-shot that was only kept out by the crossbar.

He could not score in Cardiff, although he made his mark by providing a fantastic assist to help Cristiano Ronaldo open the scoring, with a shift of direction from side to side.
