Cristiano took time out to chat to AS while he spends the last few days of his holidays in Dubai. The forward reflected on what has been an outstanding 2014 – one in which the team picked up four trophies in one calendar year for the first time in history. “We’ve had quite a few amazing moments like the Copa del Rey final, the Champions League, the European Super Cup and now, the FIFA Club World Cup… which we dedicate to all madridistas and everyone at the club from the President to every last employee; that trophy is for all of them,” Cristiano said.
Real Madrid have never won four trophies in one calendar year in 112 years of club history. For Cristiano, who contributed 56 goals for Madrid’s cause in 2014, winning ‘La Décima’ was particularly special. “I couldn’t single out one of the four but if I had to choose one, it would be the Champions League in Lisbon, but all of them were spectacular to win”.
This was also the year in which Cristiano became the first player to have completed an honours list of League, Cup, domestic Supercup, Champions League, Club World Cup, Ballon d’Or and ESM Golden Shoe with different clubs. He has equalled his most successful year on a team level (2008 with Manchester United) but hopes 2015 brings even more glory. “I hope 2015 is even better than 2014. [At Real Madrid] we have a collective spirit which can propel us to win the most silverware possible. It’s possible because Madrid is always amongst the candidates to win every competition they enter. We will be giving absolutely everything we’ve got to win every trophy in play next year,” he continued.
The player confessed that a large chunk of Madrid’s successes out on the pitch have been down to coach Carlo Ancelotti. “The boss is incredibly important in all of this. He is an amazing coach and an amazing person. We are all delighted with him. Together, we are like a family and united in our attempts to go even better than we have done in 2014”.
Cristiano signed off from his conversation with AS with a personal message for the fans: “I would like to wish everybody a Happy Christmas and Happy holidays and I hope that 2015 is a spectacular year for all madridistas. My wish for the New Year is peace and good health for all and that 2015 is a better year for everyone – especially for children, those who are most in need and the elderly”.
