Juve, City and PSG, the teams to avoid in the last sixteen

We now know the names of the 16 teams who have made it through to the knock-out stage of this season’s Champions League competition. The draw for the next phase will take place next Monday (December 15th) at 1200 (CET). From La Liga, Atlético, Real Madrid and Barcelona are all through as group leaders along with Monaco, Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea and FC Porto.

Their rivals will come from the eight second placed teams: Juventus, Basel, Bayer Leverkusen, Arsenal, Manchester City, PSG, Schalke and Shakhtar. Teams from the same country cannot face each another and the same applies to teams who were together in the group phase. On paper it would appear that Juve, Manchester City (who beat Bayern during the group phase) and PSG, are the strongest of the teams in the second pot. Germany is the only nation who sees its four Champions League representatives make it into the last 16.

Liverpool, Olympiakos, Roma, Ajax, Anderlecht, Sporting Lisbon, Athletic Bilbao and Zenit will all play in the Europa League having finished in third place in their respective qualifying groups.
