In just four minutes, Villarreal had put their Copa del Rey Round of 32 first tie on track at the Ramón de Carranza. Gerard Moreno tapped in the opener after only 16 minutes then Nahuel stroked home number two after a slick passing move. Hosts Cádiz however were in no mood to give up their only hope of silverware, or at the very least a decent Cup run, and began increasing their advances into the Villarreal half.
Aitor Arregi arrived at the back post to steer in from a corner to make it 2-1 just moments after the turnaround and while the visitors suffered a dip, Cádiz suddenly sensed that they could level the game. On 58 minutes Adrián Marín was shown a straight red card and Villarreal’s problems increased when Israel Puerto was taken off on doctor’s orders after suffering concussion, leaving Marcelino’s side with just nine men on the field. The coach will be happy with Tomás Pina’s performance as a makeshift centre-back and will be looking to sew up the tie when the two teams return for the return at El Madrigal in a fortnight’s time.
