Sporting Gijón make history: 16 weeks unbeaten

Sporting Gijón made history yesterday as they leveled the second division’s record for games unbeaten. The previous record was held by the Real Murcia team during the 1991/1992 season. The Asturian side travel to Santander next Saturday and will be hoping to maintain their excellent run that has seen them share the lead at the top of the second division with Paco Herrera’s, Las Palmas.


Yesterdays’ visitors to the El Molinon stadium, Lugo proved to be tough position as alluded to by Abelardo Fernández, during the week preceding the game. He warned that Lugo move the ball well and highlighted the threat that their forward line poses.


The visitors commenced the game dominating possession and were duly rewarded when veteran striker, David Aganzo put the Galician team ahead on the twelfth minute.


After Pablo Perez put the home crowd in raptures with his 78th minute header the visitors spent the last ten minutes attacking the home goal sensing a nervousness amongst the home side. Sporting goalkeeper Cuéllar was called into action on more than once. With the game about to go into injury time, the goalkeeper was beaten but to the relief but to the relief of the 15.000 crowd, the referee disallowed the goal deeming that defender Bernardo had been fouled prior to Lugo player, Iriome putting the ball in the net
