Carlo Ancelotti joined fellow candidates for FIFA’s Men’s’ Coach of the Year award, Joachim Löw and Diego Simeone in this afternoon’s press conference in Zurich.
Your job: “What is most important is working very hard – you have to have the capacity to work hard and bring out the best in your players. It requires a lot of effort and you have to make the players understand that what matters is the team and the club”.
Football technology as a means of improving the game: “Goal technology is a great help. But when a referee signals for a foul in the area and shows the players a direct red card, that’s a bit too much in my opinion – awarding a penalty is enough”.
Coaches shouldn’t decide who the team’s star player is: “In my experience, I’ve been fortunate to have coached players who have a very professional attitude so it has never been much of a problem for me. Once a player understands that he must channel all of his efforts and qualities into the team, then there’s not much more they need to know. We, the coaches, have to try to treat all of our players in the same way – even though some of them might have less technical ability”.
Increased work rate and getting rest between games: “When I started out as a manager, I had a week to prepare for a game; now that is utopia. Nowadays, a coach will have to prepare for a game every three days. That completely changes the coach’s responsibilities and the working conditions of the players. I think that, at the moment, there are too many games and that makes it tough for coaches”.
Cristiano: “Cristiano has had a fantastic year. We were lucky that he enjoyed a fantastic Champions League campaign in which he really helped the team a lot. He was consistent and scored a lot of goals”.
Brazilian coaches: “I don’t believe the idea that Brazil doesn’t have good coaches. The ones they have now are good. Scolari is a good coach but at times, coaches are slaves to the results they get. Results didn’t go Brazil’s way at the World Cup but that’s not to say they haven’t got a good coach. There are good coaches in all parts of the world”.
No players from Serie A among the candidates: “Football goes through cycles. Next to me is the coach who won the World Cup. But not so long ago, Germany was having problems; they reorganized themselves and went on to become world champions. I think the same thin will happen to Italy. The cycle will come around again and that is fundamental in world football”.
