Atlético train with new-boy Cani and the fit-again Miranda

Atlético Madrid returned to training on Thursday after their 2-0 win against Real Madrid in the first leg of their Copa del Rey last 16 tie at the Vicente Calderón on Wednesday night. The big news relating to their training session was the presence of Cani, whose loan deal from Villarreal was finalised on Wednesday. The 33-year-old has already worked with his new team-mates at their training facility in Majadahonda.

Although the player has trained up until now with Villarreal, he will work to a different schedule to the rest of his new team-mates until he reaches the physical state expected of an Atlético player, which is very high. Cani will be presented as an Atlético player at the Calderón on Friday.

Cani watched Atlético’s win over local rivals Real Madrid from the VIP box at the Calderón on Wednesday, having passed his medical with the league champions earlier in the day.

The other good news that emerged from Majadahonda today was the return of Joao Miranda, who has been given the all-clear and worked with the group of players who sat on the bench during the Copa derby. Those who started the victory carried out alternative recuperation work in the gym and on the pitch.

With the return of the Brazilian centre-back, Simeone now has just two players out of action; Ansaldi, who worked in the gym as he continues his recovery from a sprained knee, and Cebolla, who is recovering well from a muscle spasm.

Atlético’s sporting director, José Luis Pérez Caminero, spoke about Cani’s arrival: “He is an experienced player in our league and one with tremendous quality who will increase the competitiveness within our group. He is used to carrying a great responsibility and we are very happy with his arrival because we believe that he will contribute much to the team during this decisive part of the season.”
