LFP will honour Messi before Barça's clash with Atlético

On Sunday, the National Professional Football League (LFP) will, as promised, pay tribute to Lionel Messi, who broke Telmo Zarra’s historical La Liga goalscoring record during Barcelona’s match against Sevilla on November 23.

The LFP’s recognition previously caused waves after their president, Javier Tebas, refused to rule out the possibility of honouring the forward at Real Madrid’s Estadio Santiago Bernabéu if the forward broke the record during Barça’s match there in October. After seeing the unfavourable response to his announcement, he stated that it would be delayed. In the end, Messi broke the record against Sevilla.

Tebas considered that Barcelona’s forthcoming match with Atlético Madrid was a good choice to pay tribute to the 27-year-old in order to give the ceremony the desired impact.

Initially, it was expected that Zarra’s family would turn up at the Camp Nou to ‘hand over' the record to the Argentine star. However, the family have excused their forthcoming absence on the grounds of personal reasons.
