Today’s edition of L’Équipe features a compilation of all of the Real Madrid players who have been on the end of whistles from the stands at the Bernabéu. The French daily criticizes Madrid fans for getting on the backs of their own players far too easily and cited the most recent case when Gareth Bale felt the full wrath of the Bernabéu for skewing a shot wide in last week’s meeting with Espanyol.
Bale isn’t the only player to have miffed Madridistas. There have been a number of cases over the years. Here are some that LÉquipe recall: Benzema was whistled for his display against FC Basel in September 2014, Iker Casillas got the same treatment during the same month, in the Madrid derby against Atlético; Di María unintentionally upset the fans in the game against Celta in January 2014; Cristiano was whistled when Madrid met Rayo Vallecano in March last year are the most recent examples.
Zidane knows what it’s like to have the whistling of a packed Bernabéu ringing in his ears as do Ronaldo Nazário (who was whistled and called ‘Fatty’ in the meeting with Arsenal in February 2006) and Roberto Carlos, who declared that he would no longer deal with the press after a Bernabéu bashing, only to relent a few weeks’ later.
