Muguruza to debut for Spain in Fed Cup against Romania

Spain Confederations Cup captain Conchita Martínez has called up Garbiñe Muguruza, Silvia Soler, Lara Arruabarrena and Anabel Medina for the World Group II first round tie against Romania, which will take place in Galati on February 7 and 8.

Martínez, the 1994 Wimbledon champion, explained that Spain's highest-ranked player, Carla Suárez, is unavailable because of a problem in her right elbow. "Having two top 20 players is extremely important, but on this occasion it wasn't possible. Carla is recovering from her injury and decided to rest, but she'll be ready for the next tie."

Muguruza, who was born in Venezuela to a Spanish father and Venezuelan mother, chose to represent Spain last November. Currently ranked 24 in singles and 18 in doubles, she will team up with Medina for the pairs rubber if it is deemed necessary. Medina, 31, has decided only to play doubles on the WTA Tour this season. Muguruza, 20, will make her Fed Cup debut against Romania. "It will be a tough tie," she noted.

"We are going out to win," said Martínez. "We want to put ourselves in a position to up. I have full confidence in the team."

Romania will be able to call upon world number three Simona Halep, Irina-Camelia Begu (42), Monica Niculescu (49) and Alexandra Dulgheru (87).
