Sergio Ramos was unable to take part in Friday’s training session – the first of the New Year. The defender’s absence implies that he has only an outside chance of recovering in time for Sunday’s game against Valencia. Ramos admitted that he played last month’s FIFA Club World Cup final carrying a small muscle tear and it is still unknown whether he will be ready in time to be included in Carlo Ancelotti’s squad for the opening game of 2015.
The good news was that Marcelo was able to train with the rest of the squad and could return to the starting line-up at Mestalla.
James Rodríguez has also been declared fit which leave just Luka Modric and Ramos in the sick bay. Ancelotti’s possible starting XI at Mestalla on Sunday could be: Casillas; Carvajal, Pepe, Varane, Coentrao or Marcelo; Kroos, James, Isco; Bale, Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo
