Real Sociedad coach David Moyes previewed tomorrow’s Copa del Rey decider against Villarreal in Tuesday’s press conference. The Basque outfit go into the game trailing by a one-goal margin from the first leg and the Scottish manager called for fans to turn up and lend their support as La Real attempt to turn the tie in their favour.
“We know it’s a hard game because Villarreal are a good team but we have to try and make our home advantage count because we have to score at least one or two goals to have any chance of going through,” Moyes began. “I do think Villarreal are a very good team – they are one of the better teams in Spain that I have seen so far this season; we found it very difficult to play against them in both of our recent meetings with them so we need to try and cause them even more problems tomorrow night”.
The coach said that Imanol Agirretxe, who has been struggling to shake off a hamstring injury for the past month, is nearing his return but doubts that the player could last a full game. Agirretxe’s return would bolster a side who have been struggling to find the net.
“In every game we have tried to score more goals,” Moyes explained. “We have to try and create more, we have to take the chances that we do get but our style is to attack and score as many goals as we can. Our style is not to defend. But if can’t score and we’re not creating chances then we have to make sure we don’t concede any”.
While a decent Cup run would delight the coach, he insists that La Real have to get their priorities in order. “The league is our priority – it has to be. I don’t want us to have any problems with relegation; I said that from Day 1. But I would love to give something to the fans to give them the chance of seeing the team in a final. If we did get to the Cup final it would be fantastic. But let’s not kid ourselves we have some very big games coming up – like tomorrow’s against Villarreal… there will be some very big teams to face to go all the way and get to the final. I think we should be realistic but our hopes, our dreams are that one day, we can get to a Cup final”
Moyes ended by giving one reason why fans should come along to Anoeta and get behind the team in their quest to make the quarter finals: “Real Sociedad 1 – Barça 0: that’s why you should come and watch your team. The players are working so hard in training. Maybe they don’t always show it out on the pitch, but I can tell you now that they are trying, they are trying to improve. We gained a great result against Barcelona – come and support your team,” Moyes ended.
