Chelsea manager José Mourinho declared Raphaël Varane and Kurt Zouma as “two of the best young defenders in the world” in today’s pre-match press conference as his side gear up for Saturday’s trip to Aston Villa.
Mourinho, on Zinedine Zidane’s advice, brought Varane to Real Madrid in June 2011. The 21-year-old centre-back made his full senior debut just a couple of months later on September 21 in the league meeting with Racing. He has made 97 appearances in all competitions with Madrid and gained his first call-up with France in August 2012 although he had to wait until the following year to make his debut.
Zouma meanwhile caught Mourinho’s eye just a few month’s after graduating to Saint-Étienne’s first team and lured to Stamford Bridge on a five and a half year deal during the 2014 winter transfer window.
“The French Football Federation should write me a letter of thanks because they have two of the best young defenders in the world,” said a droll Mourinho today. “As young defenders, can you imagine what Zouma and Varane will represent in football in the next couple of years? I’m sure Didier [Deschamps] is very happy”.
