Coentrao: "It would be an honour to play for United"

Manchester United want Fabio Coentrao to reinforce their defence next season. The real Madrid full-back, who was the architect of Portugal’s win against Serbia at the weekend, has long been coveted by the English club. The Red Devils were on the verge of signing him in 2013 on the last day of the summer transfer window, but a bureaucratic problem prevented the documentation needed to finalise the transfer in time.

AS reported United’s interest in Coentrao today (Tuesday) and the player himself has recognised in O Jogo that he would be happy to play at Old Trafford: “I already showed that interest in playing there (at Manchester United). It’s one of the best clubs in the world, a club that I admire a lot. It would be an honour to play there.”

The full-back also revealed his affection for Benfica, but the option of returning there in the near future has been practically discarded.

“Everyone knows that Benfica is my home,” he added. “I love Benfica and I have a special affection for the club, but I still have four more years on my contract at Madrid.”

Coentrao also discussed his current situation at Madrid and his desire to feature more regularly for the European champions.

“I hope to have more minutes at Real Madrid and that the coach relies on me more, something that has not happened up to now,” he said.
