Gayà rejects Valencia's first contract renewal offer

José Luis Gayà is once again within range of Real Madrid after the player, through his representatives Toldrá Consulting, rejected the first contract renewal proposal that was presented to him by his current club Valencia.

On February 17, Valencia offered to extend his contract until 2021 (his current deal expires in 2018) and increase his release clause fee from €18m to €40m. In addition, in the proposal which was rejected by Gayà’s agents, his annual salary would have jumped from €250,000 to €1.5m.

According to sources in the negotiation, the sticking point is the new release clause fee – the player does not want it to exceed €30m. Other sources claim that the main reason for the rejection is because the player’s representatives, who are aware of Real Madrid’s interest, are buying time as they await movement from the European champions.

A few weeks ago Valencia assured that Gayà’s contract renewal would not be a problem. But today marks the deadline to finalise the operation that was set by Amadeo Salvo.

Additionally, the contacts between the club and the full-back’s agents have only taken place via telephone and email. The player’s representatives have not yet sat down with Valencia. This seems to show that the renewal is not as close as has been said.

Madrid, for their part, want Gayà. But they will not handle the signing in a hostile manner as the two clubs have an excellent relationship. The Gayà saga will rumble on for a while…

He was one of the executioners of Madrid at Mestalla

Madrid lost their first match of 2015 at Mestalla (2-1) and one of the main architects of Valencia’s win was Gayà. The full-back came on as substitute in the 23rd minute, replacing the injured Pablo Piatti, and he was a constant threat down his flank. After the match he was praised by Carlo Ancelotti and Nuno. Right now, the left-back is carrying a muscle injury that he suffered while training with Spain’s Under-21s. Anyway, Valencia’s medical team are optimistic and confident that he will recover in time for the Liga match against Villarreal at Mestalla on Sunday. Gayà is a key piece in Nuno’s tactical systems. The full-back has played 2,299 minutes in La Liga. In total, between La Liga and the Copa del Rey, he has played 29 matches this season, scoring twice.
