The goal threat of Madrid’s trident is undoubted. Cristiano, Bale and Benzema’s statistics are what drives team. But the contribution of the players who come on from the bench is another story entirely: Madrid’s substitutes in the Liga have managed a paltry total of four goals. Just 5.3% of the side’s total. Looking at all competitions, the substitutes have notched just nine goals out of a total of 111. Just 8%.
But it’s in the Liga where the sub-drought is most notable. Chicharito scored two against Deportivo, but the game was already over (2-8); Jesé scored against Sevilla with James off with a broken bone in his foot (2-1, the only truly decisive goal from the bench) and Nacho Fernández finished off Espanyol (3-0).
Barcelona’s substitutes double the rate for Madrid’s: hitting eight of 70 for 11.4%. Neymar has three (two against Athletic and one against Almeria); Luis Suárez, one (Levante); Pedro, two (Espanyol and Athletic) and Sandro a brace (Villarreal and Levante).
