What did it mean for you to play with Brazil on a stage like Saint Denis?
For us it was very important. We changed some history. It had been 23 years since we had won here (in Paris). And we achieved it by producing a great match.
It was little like a friendly…
We spoke a lot about this match. The idea is to prepare ourselves for the Copa América. To play against France is no ordinary friendly. And we knew how to react very well after conceding the goal. We were able to overcome it thanks to the confidence Dunga has given us. We have a young team, with a future, but we are doing the things well.
What happened with Varane’s goal?
It was a complicated piece of play, with some guys who went to ground. Varane jumped with great force.
Do you see Brazil as being the same as ever? Do you think that there is more quality at the back than further forward, with the exception of Neymar?
I do not see it the same. Our attack is f***ing great. In each match they score two, three or four goals. Everyone feels important in this team. Everyone, additionally, is involved in defence. And it shows. Today we have a strong national team.
What are your thoughts on Danilo, who looks set for Real Madrid?
He is a great player. He is in a spectacular moment. He is the player that you always want to have on a great stage like this (Saint Denis).
What did you think when you heard about Diego Simeone’s contract renewal?
Until 2020! For the players it is something that leaves us happy…
Just happy?
He is an extraordinary coach. His renewal will make Atlético great for a long time.
What does Simeone bring that sets him apart from other coaches?
His winning spirit. We know how important it is for this team. For many more years we will have Atlético fighting for important things.
You were on the verge of leaving Atlético last summer. How are you at the club now?
I am comfortable. I have a contract for this year and one more. I must only think about playing football, enjoying my minutes at Atlético and making my team fight, always, for titles.
Will you continue at the club next season?
To be honest, I want to finish well, and enjoy each moment that there is at Atlético because it’s a great team.
‘Finish well’? That sounds like goodbye…
No, no…I have another year and I am going to endeavour to fulfil my contract.
Given the emergence José María Giménez, who has been competing with you for a first-team berth, might you change that idea?
The competition is always good for team like ours. A big team must have quality players who are ready to give it all. Giménez, Godín and I are fighting to play, all great footballers, and we are going to continue like so.
Finally – for Atlético is it bad to face Madrid once again in the Champions League or are you calm because you have had the measure of them this season?
Madrid are one of the best teams that there are in the world, but Atlético have already shown that they know how to play this type of match well. Our belief is one of passing through this round.
