Pepe's Real Madrid contract renewal until 2018 is imminent

The agreement for the renewal of Pepe’s contract is imminent. The club and the player are close to reaching a deal that will extend his current contract, which expires in 2016, until the summer of 2018. Only a few small details need to be fixed, but Pepe will fulfil his dream of ending his top-level career with Madrid and he will become the John Terry of the Bernabéu side (the English centre-back, who turns 35 in December, recently extended his stay with Chelsea by a further year).

After José Mourinho’s departure from the Spanish capital in 2013, Pepe recovered the first-team berth that he had lost to Raphaël Varane. Carlo Ancelotti prevented him from leaving to join Manchester City in the summer of 2013. A season and a half later, there are no doubts within the club about extending his stay at the club despite the fact he is already 32.

At Madrid they not only value his quality but his attitude and leadership. Pepe is the fourth team captain and one of the senior figures in the dressing room. Therefore the club decided to scrap their initial idea to hand him a one-year contract extension and he will instead sign on for two further seasons.

Centre-backs. Curiously, Pepe’s last contract renewal occurred at the same time as Sergio Ramos’. They were announced together on 12 July 2011. Back then, Pepe signed a deal until 2016 and his centre-back partner extended his stay until 2017. Now the situation is different. While Pepe’s renewal is imminent, Ramos’ contract extension talks have been halted and they are far from reaching fruition. Varane, the club’s third-choice centre-back, is waiting to see what happens with his team-mates in order to take decisions about his future in search of first-team minutes. The 21-year-old has Pepe and Ramos in front of him in the pecking order and does not want this situation to stall his fledgling career.
