Sergio Ramos turns 29 today. His last 365 days have possibly been the best of his life: his second Copa del Rey (April 16), the birth of his son Sergio (May 6), the Décima (May 24), the European Super Cup (August 12), the Club World Cup (December 20), his inclusion in the FIFA FIFPro World XI (January 12) and his 125thcap for Spain (March 27). He is on track to make history at Real Madrid and he now looks to join the select group of players who have reached 500 matches as a Madridista.
He has made 434 outings for the reigning European champions and is tied with Zoco in 16th place in the club’s all-time list of appearances. He has Paco Buyo (454) ahead of him, but he won’t be able to match the former goalkeeper’s tally this season because there are only 15 matches left, assuming Madrid reach the Champions League final. However, taking into account his average number of matches per season over the course of his ten campaigns at Madrid, the Camas-born defender could end up in 2017 (when his contract expires) with 534 matches under his belt. We must consider injuries and suspensions (his tally of 19 red cards as a Real Madrid player is the highest in the club’s history) to reach this figure. If he extends his contract at Real Madrid he can aspire to enter the club’s all-time top ten, where Guti lies in tenth with 542 appearances.
