Sergio Ramos' Real Madrid contract renewal is in neutral

Lack of communication builds a wall which is often difficult to break down. Real Madrid and Sergio Ramos currently find themselves at that point with regards to the extension of the defender’s contract, which finishes in 2017 (when he will be 31). The most recent conversation between the two parties took place six months ago, although it involved the player’s brother and agent René, not the defender himself. There is no climate of confidence. Beyond the money, Ramos waits for acknowledgement on the part of club that he has not found during this period.

He carries to the end the philosophy that he demonstrated to the supporter who rebuked Jesé: “If we lose, we all lose. If we win, also.” In that sense, the second club captain understands that the Décima conquest has left multiple winnings at Real Madrid: it claims to be the club with the highest income in the world (€603.9m) and the Club World Cup left €5m in its coffers (as did the Christmas gig in Dubai).

Additionally, players such as Raphaël Varane, Karim Benzema and Luka Modric renewed their contracts in the summer and the club has invested €129m in reinforcements (James Rodríguez, Toni Kroos, Keylor Navas and Lucas Silva). But the club have set a list of task in which Ramos’ contract renewal does not occupy a prominent place. The reverse. The player was visibly seen as hurt in the elimination from the Copa del Rey and for the two goals that were conceded in the Camp Nou.

He was one of the four best defenders in the world in 2014 according to FIFA. The cache of those players is far from his: Thiago Silva (€12m salary), David Luiz (€11m salary) and Philipp Lahm (€10m salary). But for the footballer, the economic question is not vital. He has the soul of a captain and analyses the treatment that the actual captain Iker Casillas (who could leave through the back-door, to the displeasure of the club) and coach Carlo Ancelotti (backed only until the end of the season) is receiving.

Ramos wants to retire at Madrid, but he does not want to crawl to the offices. If he is not called, he will not make the call himself. At the club, today, they are not in the mood…
