Javi Martínez “99% sure” he has a torn cruciate ligament

Bayern Munich’s Javi Martínez was forced to retire from today’s DFL-Supercup final against Borussia Dortmund after suffering an injury to his left knee. The Spain international sustained the injury after colliding with an opponent while contesting a high ball half an hour after kick-off. He was taken off on a stretcher, writhing in agony.

“I’ve knackered my knee and right now, I’m on the team bus. I’ve spoken to the doctor and he’s told me that there is a 99% per cent chance that I have torn my cruciate and external (sic) ligaments,” the player said on a video published on his Facebook page. “If it is the cruciate ligament that is damaged, they will operate tomorrow and I’ll begin a recovery programme so that I can return even stronger. I’m determined to come back a better player, I’ll be back”.

At half-time, Bayern’s Director of Sport wasn’t optimistic about Javi Martínez’s injury. “It looks bad,” he said while coach Pep Guardiola told reporters after the game: “The worst part of the game was Javi’s injury; he was in good form. On Thursday we will know a little more but I think he is going to be out for a while”.
