Cristiano training six hours daily to be ready for derby

"I’ll be ready for the derby”. Cristiano is desperate to play and is optimistic of being ready for the Madrid derby next Saturday against Atlético at the Bernabéu. His recovery programme involves intensive six hour sessions Madrid's training ground at Valdebebas. The Portuguese star suffered a knock to his back during the first leg of the Super Cup which in turn provoked a muscular strain in his left leg. This situation, combined with his lack of pre-season training forced the player and club to take the decision not to play him against Real Sociedad and plan a specific recovery plan to ensure that Cristiano is ready for the demanding season ahead.

It could be claimed that Cristiano’s real pre-season only started last week. Since then, the player has being undergoing a specific programme divided into various areas: work on the pitch, recovery in the swimming pool, weight training in the gym combined with physio sessions. The objective of this personalised programme is to ensure that Cristiano is both ready for next Saturday’s derby match against Atlético and also the long season ahead. The idea is also to avoid a repeat of last season, where the Portuguese was plagued intermittently by injury and on many occasions played despite carrying slight knocks.

Last Sunday, Cristiano began jogging and during the course of the week has increased the volume of work on the pitch gradually. Assuming that the rehabilitation plan goes as scheduled it’s anticipated that Cristiano can re-join the rest of the Real Madrid squad on Tuesday or Wednesday of next.
