Real Murcia in 2B, Getafe’s Pedro León left without a playing license... The financial fair play controls have already claimed their first victims. Others have managed to avoid punishment by a narrow margin. Elche had to delay making three new signings until they secured agreement from the rest of the squad in accepting a salary reduction. Racing Santander and Zaragoza were saved from demotion in the eleventh hour. The remedy is difficult but already we have seen a considerable reduction in football’s collective debt, something long over-due. One hopes that we will also see an end to un-paid players wages, always a major sore-point. No one, except for the big teams, who work in different budgeting eco-system, will be allowed to escape from a correlation of income-spending-debt.
AFE (The players’ association) are complaining. Spanish footballers are seeing a reduction in their wages. Tebas, the driving force behinf the initiative claims that it’s prudent that players sign contracts for less and at least guarantee getting paid, as opposed to the alternative situation: clubs making financial promises they were unable to comply with, as they also struggled to pay their tax and general maintenance bills. AFE complain that the cuts can be made in other areas and cite outside private investment funds as a negative external force that need to be addressed. They claim that these funds suit the interests of many players' representatives as they get their own players to sign up to schemes.
This type of criticism from AFE is exactly what makes Tebas in acting like a 15th century monarch, dispatching justice or benevolence as he sees fit. AFE have accused him of taking on issues that are out of his domain and have asked that an external commission be brought in to mediate. In Tebas’s favour his recent work has met with the approval of Miguel Cardenal (Secretary of State). In the middle of everything there is the inconsistent case of Pedro León, still earning at Getafe as if he were playing, despite him not being able to play. “Playing him would be unfair competition”, responds Tebas. Of course, but do Getafe meet with the ‘ratio’?
