Del Bosque: "Munir was the logical choice"

Spanish coach Vicente Del Bosque was interviewed on the new football programme 'Partido a partido' (Cuatro) and discussed calling up Munir to replace Diego Costa. He talked about Casillas and the controversy surrounding Piqué’s absence.

Munir. "We’ve opted for a home-grown option with Munir. We haven’t made the decision so the player can’t play for Morocco. There were reasons as why Celades initially called him up to the U-21 squad; he’s developing really well and we expect good things from him. We called him up as he was also currently based in the Federation complex".

Diego Costa. "It hasn’t been easy with Diego. All his teammates are trying to help him. He’s a great guy and has always shown interest in playing for Spain. When there were doubts surrounding his fitness he was the first wanting to join the squad. Now he’s in great form but I wouldn’t suggest that he’s feeling pressure from his club".

Piqué. "There is no contradiction, I mentioned that he called me to advise that he was slightly inured but wanted to join the squad. He’s a committed guy. The only person to know how Piqué is feeling is the player himself. I wasn’t surprised that he played 90 minutes against Villarreal. He tells me that he has a slight knock but can still manage to play for his club. There’s no need into look into the subject any further".

Goalkeeper against Macedonia. "I’ve made a decision but it’s yet to be made official".

Casillas. “We know who will play in goal but it hasn’t been announced yet. Casillas has had a difficult 18 months but he is more concerned with losing the affection of the Madrid fans than he is with not playing. We’re not going to do things that don’t make common sense. De Gea is an alternative and his development and learning process make him one of the present and future goalkeepers of the national team”.

Xavi and Xabi. "Xavi and Xabi Alonso will be remembered as great footballers. Now it’s time to make way for other great players such as Isco, Thiago, Herrera or Koke, along with others, such as Busquets, Iturraspe and other talents who will emerge in the future".
