The Portuguese Football Federation have announced that Fabio Coentrao, the Real Madrid left-back, was released from the national team camp on Monday due to problems with his left knee.
“Fábio still has pain in his left knee and the medical department believe he is not fit for selection,” said the FPF.
The 26-year-old's absence will be a big loss for Portugal as they prepare for Saturday's friendly against France and next week's Euro 2016 qualifying clash against Denmark (October 14), when they will be under the stewardship of new coach Fernando Santos.
The left-back has played 47 international matches and scored four times since 2009, when he made his international debut.
