Ramos: "The door is always going to be open for Piqué here"

Sergio Ramos spoke on Monday following his arrival at the Spanish national team´s training camp, Ciudad del Fútbol, in Las Rozas. The Real Madrid man revealed that he is hopeful of recovering from his injury in time for Spain´s Euro 2016 qualifying clash against Slovakia on Thursday, while he also talked about team-mates Gerard Piqué and Iker Casillas, whose roles within the national team set-up have come under scrutiny in recent times. This is what he said:

Injury: “I have a small strain – I hope that it will not be anything serious. When I got up this morning it wasn´t terrible, but we must wait. I am feeling very positive and I hope that I can travel. However, if there are doubts it is better for me to stay here.”

Little rest: “I am not one of those who usually complains and I am delighted that I have not been rested a lot in recent years. Additionally, I have been very lucky with injuries."

Problems in Spain with centre-backs: “The coach has got problems because he has great players. Vicente knows every centre-back perfectly. We hope that there will not be a dearth of centre-backs. There are some very good centre-backs around, such as Bartra, San José and Iñigo Martínez.”

The controversy surrounding Piqué : “It is not good to create controversy about this. Piqué has been playing with the national team for many years and he has done it very well. When a player who has been called up regularly is absent it is normal to speak with the coach. The doors are open. I would always like to be with the national team."

About Cataluña and España: “I have nothing to say about political matters.”

Confidence: “There is a lot of confidence among the players in the squad. It´s clear that we have two important matches, and winning them would take us two steps closer to Euro 2016.”

The applause for Iker at the Bernabéu : “It was expected. When the supporters whistle you it makes you self-critical. When you speak about Iker you speak about a piece of Real Madrid´s club badge.”
