Absentees and attendees at a funeral

There were no official representatives from Deportivo la Coruña at yesterday’s burial of Romero Taboada, which passed of without incident and was a private affair. This was a gesture by Depor president, Tino Fernández in distancing the club from the ultra movement and one we should applaud. This would not have been an easy decision. In A Coruña the outcome of Sunday’s events are still ever-present and the fact remains that the only fatality in the fight was from A Coruña, as were the majority of those detained by the police. No-one feels that their ultras are worse or more worthy of punishment than the rest. This asymmetry of pain has been a casual thing, but it exists in A Coruña. For that reason I value the position of the club even more.

One person who was present, was ex-Depor president, Lendoiro, he now has no connection with the club and if anything has a poor relationship with the current board. Lendoiro’s presence is misguided, or maybe not. When he left the club as president he was awarded with a commemorative plaque by the Riazor Blues. Lendoiro, until yesterday was the overseas ambassador for the Liga de Fútbol Profesional (LFP). Upon being made aware of his presence at the funeral, Javier Tebas announced his immediate expulsion from the LFP. This is a gesture which reflects this new direction which is being adopted. Lendoiro represents a viewpoint on ultra culture that is finished. A new chapter has opened and it began last Sunday.

This was a matter discussed on Spanish national TV last night. The hope is that affair has affected everybody and change will arise as a result. Last Sunday’s events have generated a collective repulsion and now the future needs to be forged with everyone collectively implicated. It’s anticipated that new directives on the matter will emerge from today’s meeting between the Federation and the LFP at the governmental sports offices. The results will be interesting but what’s more interesting will be getting them put into place. There are signs for hope. We’ve seen this from the reaction from Atlético, Depor and the LFP in the past few days.
