Alcoyano were left without the glory they surely deserved ay their home ground of El Collao last night. The could have scored a hat-full in the second half against a poor Athletic team but ended up conceding an equalizer in the last minute of the game and in doing so, complicating the return leg for themselves. The goal for the Basque team was scored by Viguera, after some great individual work and an unstoppable left foot drive.
Athletic were too generous during the game, not just because of their donation of 15.000 euro of the takings from return leg at San Mamés, after Alcoyano’s club offices suffered a robbery. After dominating the first half, it appeared if they decided to play the send half with their arms folded to help out the local side. Óscar López’s team had three excellent occasions to further their lead but had to make do with a 1-0 scoreline at the break.
It felt that Alcoyano had struck gold in the first half when Ferrón managed to score from the home side’s only chance in the half. It was blatantly clear that Valverde had the team playing at half pace acutely aware of the bigger games the club will face in the forthcoming weeks.
It was clear in the Basque team's pre-match game plan that a goal for Alcoyano wasn’t in the script and alarm bells rang after Francis Ferrón, nipped in between Gurpegui and Laporte to tuck home from a pass from Alfaro. It felt like a fluke, but no, after the break Alcoyano played the ball around with incredible confidence but the last act of the night was the fine goal from Viguera. All to play for in the return leg at San Mamés.
