Blatter, Platini: please take Villar to task

This is an article that I’d like to see reach both Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini (I mention this upfront to get the attention of their press departments who are most attentive regarding news stories relating to their respective bosses). You both may be aware that Ángel María Villar is sidestepping efforts that are being made in the ongoing conflict to bring ultra-groups into line here in Spain. You need to be aware that on Monday last a meeting was scheduled at the Spanish Football Federation with a view to amend laws to help in the ongoing anti-ultra campaign. Villar cancelled this meeting with the excuse that he was going to Morocco, where his presence was not initially expected until Tuesday. Please be aware that the picture of the three of you taken together at the Stade du Marrakech reflects poorly on both of you.

You both need to be aware that in Spain there is a growing movement of “enough’s enough” following the street battle between Atletico Madrid and Deportivo La Coruña ultra groups which resulted in the death on one person and which has shocked society in general. This incident triggered off an initiative to confront ultra groups and the only absentee has been Villar. He has not only been forthcoming in criticizing the subject but has also managed to wriggle out of every meeting that sought to address the problem. The feeling is that he has sabotaged these meetings with his attitude on the issue.

You need to be aware that he has avoided the call from the Spanish government, protecting himself by the sovereignty of football. This is a tactic he has used before but how he’s doing so against public opinion with the objective of ending ultra groups. You’re refuge (potentiality unaware of this situation), at the VIP area in the Marrakesh stadium, reflects badly on both of you. If either of you still retain any influence over this wayward individual, and have the desire to use it, I would ask that you that you get him to take the necessary steps that the matter requires, as they are both necessary and straightforward. For the good of the game in Spain and in general.
