Athletic club Bilbao president, Josu Urrutia confirmed at the Basques clubs’ headquarters, Ibaigane that he and team will stand for re-election at the club’s presidential elections which have been announced to be held on Friday, March 27th. Urrutia, affirmed that holding elections mid-way through the season is “best for the interests of the club”. “That way, the future board will have time to take an overview on the club’s situation and have sufficient time to make decisions that will have an impact on the following season”, he reasoned. “We’ve decided that this is the best way forward for Athletic”.
“We’ve spent time on choosing an appropriate date, so that decisions can be made with prudence, to make signings and give everybody the time necessary. I don’t think that decisions will be made that have anything to do with the performances of the team. Three months is an appropriate window of time. It's at the end of the season when sporting matters become more relevant”.
“Whoever is president will have sufficient time to decide on what role Ernesto Valverde plays at the club. Ernesto doesn’t want to have his contract renewed at the moment”, added Urrutia regarding the situation with the current Athletic Club coach. “We have the energy and hunger to secure another term at the club”, he concluded.
