New Atlético de Madrid signing Fernando Torres, accompanied by club CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín, gave a press conference in Dubai’s Atlantis Hotel this morning in which he explained his decision to leave AC Milan and confirmed that he would be joining his old club.
“I decided to join AC Milan because I thought I would get more playing time and they told me that I would be a key member of the squad. Unfortunately, after just a few months, I started to discover that the coach didn’t count on me – something which I respect 100 per cent but that forced me to look ahead to the future and begin looking for another club,” Torres explained.
During the press conference a video was played of a young Torres during his first spell at Atlético. “Atlético made contact and I was in no doubt at all,” the player continued. “I would like to thank AC Milan for their understanding and for making it easy to find a quick solution. I’m going back to Atleti to find happiness. When I was a boy, I used to dream about playing for Atleti and my dream came true. Going back now feels like another dream has become a reality for me”.
When asked about how he feels Atlético supporters view his return, Torres said, “I haven’t thought too much about it but they know that Atlético is my home and they also know that, even while I was away, I felt the pain of their defeats with them and enjoyed the team’s triumphs with them. I was jumping up and down on the sofa during the last few trophy wins. No one should be in any doubt to what I am going to feel pulling on the red and white jersey again. Atleti fans have always demanded that players give everything they have got out on the field and I can assure them that I will be doing just that - and more”.
