Rubén Castro has become part of Real Betis history. He is the club’s top goalscorer of all time with his strike against Almeria in the cup game last Friday. The player received a special homage from the club and fans before last night’s home game against Mallorca in the league.
The Canary Islander equaled the existing club record held by Manuel Dominguez with his goal away to Llagostera in Palamós (0-2) last weekend.
Last night before the Mallorca game, his team mates paid tribute to his achievement with a guard of honour and a massive banner was displayed with the words “Rubén Castro, legendary player”. The stadium electronic scoreboard then displayed some of the Betis strikers more memorable goals for the club.
Manuel Dominguez Sánchez, passed away in 1998, a player originally from Cantabria, he had two spells at Betis, from 1945 to 1947 with the side in the second division and later between 1950 and 1953, with Betis down in the third division. He notched 94 strikes in his five campaigns with the Andalusian club.
Rubén Castro is also celebrating his fifth season with Betis, moving from Deportivo in 2010 with the Seville based club in the second tier. His 27 goals that season were a contributing factor in the club securing promotion back to the top flight.
In the last three seasons with the club in the first division, Castro scored: 16, 18 and 10 goals respectively. He also found the net in European competition and in the Spanish cup.
Following Betis’ relegation last season, Castro, now at the age of 33, decided to stay with the club despite other attractive offers. With over a third of the season over, the striker has scored 12 goals in 15 league fixtures and his strike on Friday propelled him into the annals of Real Betis history.
