Messi breaks another of Zarra’s records: 77 braces

The numbers don’t lie. Whether out on the right flank, where he often moves during games, or through the middle, where he sits closer to goal, Messi appears to be back to his best. In 28 games so far this season he’s scored 31 goals and provided 14 assists.

Against Elche he also broke another historic league record. The Argentine has now scored a brace in 77 matches, an achievement that breaks Zarra’s record of 76. Cristiano Ronaldo is currently far behind on 57.

As impressive as his figures are, I suspect that Messi’s true greatness will become even clearer in time. His achievements will be legendary by the time he retires. He has already scored 20 goals or more in seven consecutive seasons. Over those years he’s scored 23, 34, 31, 50, 46, 48 and 21 goals, plus those still left to come this season. His play has led to a goal on no less than 599 occasions in the 550 games he’s played for Barcelona, scoring 430 and assisting on another 169.

Since the incident with Luis Enrique in the Anoeta changing room, Messi’s play has been stellar. Aside from the game in the Bernabéu where he didn’t perform at a high level he’s played his best in both the key games against Atletico Madrid and the group-deciding match against PSG. He ran all over Sevilla, provided the key assist at Villarreal and played well in Valencia. He’s also offering more tactical flexibility. Whereas in years gone by he’s played closer to goal it’s now not unusual to see him dropping back to the right wing. And in spite of his sporadic retching incidents, he looks fresher and stronger – something that suggests he’s increasingly confident in his game.
