Standard fans target Steven Defour with provocative banner

Standard Liege fans left the world with a shameful image this afternoon during their team’s match against fierce rivals Anderlecht. The club’s ultras unravelled an enormous banner covering most of their stand with an image depicting a masked man brandishing a sword and grasping the decapitated head of former Standard player Steven Defour, who now plies his trade with Anderlecht. The slogan“Red or Dead” read alongside the image, something that didn't escape Defour's attention.

But the story didn’t end there. Not long into the second half Defour showed his frustration at his hostile welcome by intentionally smashing the ball into the crowd, a foolish act which cost him a second yellow and a sending off. Initially Defour refused to leave the pitch and had to be ushered off, after which the visiting Anderlecht fans reacted badly and began to tear up seats and throw them into neighbouring enclosures. It was only after a long break that that play resumed, with Standard eventually running out 2-0 winners.
