Valladolid sign free agent Tulio de Melo

Promotion-chasing Real Valladolid have added Brazilian striker Tulio de Melo to their ranks, the club announced on Thursday. De Melo was a free agent after leaving Evian and had attracted interest from other clubs but decided to join Valladolid, who are third in Segunda División.

The striker, who will be 30 on Sunday, has not played since leaving Evian last June but had been training with Corinthians and had passed a trial at Championship club Charlton Athletic, Valladolid confirmed.

De Melo started out at Atletico Mineiro and was loaned out to Danish outfit Aalborg in 2004. He then played for Le Mans for three seasons, where he hit his best goal scoring form, leading to interest from Serie A. In 2008 he moved to Palermo but failed to hold down a regular place and was transferred to Lille shortly afterwards, where he again enjoyed notable success and Champions League football. However, he only played 12 times for Evian after his move there and was released in June 2014.
