Luis Enrique spoke at the press conference ahead of Barcelona’s Champions League match against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. Most of the questions were in relation to the shock defeat against Málaga on Saturday.
Who is favourite?: “This type of elimination game does not have favourites and that will be demonstrated on the pitch. I don’t think there is a favourite.”
Distractions: “We went into the match against Málaga in the best of conditions. We failed to get through the Málaga defence in the end but that wasn’t because we were thinking about other things.”
A tough opponent: “If it is a game in which they want the ball then it will be interesting, but it’s fine if they give us the ball . We’ll see what happens.”
Looking for a response: “We are not in the best position in the league and if we slip up, it’s bad. There are many games and we will have chances to close the gap. Now it’s the Champions League, a competitive that provides us with two games to get into the quarter-finals.”
How is the team?: “We could not train. After a defeat the best thing that can happen is that we compete. This is what can lead us to do things right.”
Anoeta and Málaga defeats: “The compare defeats you always have to be relative. They are defeats, nothing else. Each has its own characteristics and I don’t see why the team has to be wrong. We tried to win the matches and we will try to win this game and do things well in order to win the match and progress through the tie.”
Suárez: “It’s his first season at the club and he’s a reference for us in attack. He has qualities that help us. He looks after the ball well, he generates space...”
The key: “The game will depend on where the spaces are. We always want possession and we generate the benefits because of that. Being secure in the middle of the pitch will be key.”
The match: “Every game is different. There’s no need to think about what happened, we want to go and win this clash. I analyse everything but I’m not going to answer anything malicious. My relationship with the team is as it always has been. This is a club that always needs extra things to decorate the Christmas tree.”
The dressing room: “We only lost one game. It is true that a defeat can affect you but we must keep on fighting. We won 11 games in a row and lost the next one.”
Cesc’s visit to see Messi and Pique: "It forms part of his private life. I concentrate on football, I’m not concerned about things outside of it. I’d say it’s just the environment of the club generally. People know me from when I played at the club, you need extra things at this club to decorate the tree of life.”
