Carlo Ancelotti has opted for Lucas Silva to play in midfield alongside Isco and Toni Kroos against Schalke tonight. The Brazilian will play his second match after featuring as a substitute in the victory over Deportivo at the weekend and Asier Illarramendi drops to the bench.
Karim Benzema will also start. There were doubts that the Frenchman could miss out after failing to finish Tuesday night’s training session through illness but he has been given until the last minute to prove his fitness and he has been passed as fit to line up from the start.
Madrid XI to face Schalke: Casillas; Carvajal, Pepe, Varane, Marcelo; Lucas Silva, Kroos, Isco; Bale, Christiano Ronaldo and Benzema.
The substitutes are: Keylor Navas, Arbeloa, Nacho, Illarramendi, Medrán, Jese and Chicharito.
The referee is Englishman Martin Atkinson.
