Varane to make 100th Madrid appearance at Schalke

Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane will make his 100th appearance for the club at Schalke tonight.

The French defender will line-up alongside Pepe, who has recovered from a rib injury, in the heart of the Madrid defence in Gelsenkirchen as Carlo Ancelotti's side look to progress to the quarter-finals.

Varane had started the last two matches alongside Nacho owing to injuries to both Pepe and Sergio Ramos but the Portuguese defender will play his first match since suffering his injury in the Copa del Rey clash against Atlético madrid.

Lille-born Varane arrived at Madrid in 2011, picking the Bernabéu ahead of an offer from Manchester United, and has progressed to be ackowledged as one of the best young defenders in the world.

Today's starting role means he has been one of the most trusted players by Carlo Ancelotti in the Champions League. He will have started six of Madrid's seven matches and appeared in the other from the bench.
