Madridismo without borders. That was the name of the event held at the Luis Carlos Forum on Tuesday. Butragueño, Zoco, Arlauckas, Carlos C. Salinas (Ambassador of the Philippines), Fernando Suarez de Góngora (CEO of Fly Emirates Spain), Mariano López (general editor of the magazine Viajar) and Mark Devai, president of the Hungarian fan club of Madrid in Budapest, were all present to talk about the global reach of the club as it turns 113 years old.
Emilio Butragueño spoke about the global fanbase of the club: "According to our research, we can speak about 450 million fans throughout the world,” he said. If the world population is estimated at 7,500 million people, the estimate means six per cent of the population are Madrid fans. The club also claimed that Madrid fans are present in 186 of the 193 countries in the world.
"The first country for visits to our website is the USA. Then Colombia, Mexico, Indonesia and India,” Butragueño said, and added: "173 million of our fans follow us [on social media]. On Facebook we have 108 million -- Indonesia is the leader with eight million. On Twitter, the countries which follow Madrid most are Colombia, Mexico and Indonesia."
Stories. Mariano López, general editor of the Viajar magazine, told an interesting story about Madridistas around the world. "In the Burmese jungle, in a dispensary run by Buddhist monks, I go in and I see [Madrid midfielder Toni] Kroos on the television," López said. "It turned out they were showing the Spanish Supercopa and the monk had been watching a repeat." Mark Devai, the president of the Hungarian fan club, made mention of how many people watch the matches of Madrid in his country. Another example that Real Madrid are a club with no boundaries.
