Godín and Tiago to miss the return leg at the Calderón

Diego Godín and Tiago will miss the second leg of Atlético’s Champions League last-16 tie against Bayer Leverkusen at the Vicente Calderón. The Uruguayan centre-back was shown a yellow card for a nasty challenge on Wendell and the accumulation of bookings will see him miss the return leg. Just minutes later Tiago was sent off for a second bookable offence and left Atleti with ten men after 76 minutes.

Atleti travelled to Germany with several players already walking a tightrope. As well as Godín, captain Gabi and full-back Siqueira, who was substituted midway through the first half, were also one booking away from missing a match. Bayer only had one player, substitute Boenisch.

In the return fixture Simeone cannot call on his regular centre-back pairing. The Uruguayan Giménez ticks all of the boxes to replace his fellow countryman Godín. Atleti also leave Germany with Tiago suspended for the second leg and Saúl and injury doubt.
