The Bayern Munich forward Mario Götze, speaking to the German publication Sport Bild, said that Argentina’s Lionel Messi has set “a very high standard that barely anyone can reach”. “He has achieved enormous things than have set a standard that barely anyone can reach,” said Götze.
The 22-year-old scored the winning goal for Germany in last year’s World Cup final against Argentina. He appeared in that match as a substitute for Miroslav Klose. Before his introduction from the bench, his coach Joachim Löw told him, as a motivation tool, to go out and show the world that he could be better than Messi.
Interestingly, after the final, in the bowels of the Maracaná, Götze asked Messi if they could take a photo together. The Bayern man then shared the photos on social media.
“Occasionally, you can approach the standard that he has set, but normally it is very difficult,” said the former Borussia Dortmund player.
