The penalty shoot-out was the end of the line for Real Madrid in this year’s edition of the UEFA Youth League. Cedrés, Febas and Lienhart missed their spot-kicks and Porto, who had levelled the match with a non-existent penalty, go through to the quarter-finals after scoring all their penalties.
This was after the elimination of Real had appeared to be an impossibility during the 90 minutes of the match. The first half was a military parade from the Spanish side, that somehow finished without them scoring, despite the 11-0 statistic in terms of shots. But things turned complicated for Real at the start of the second half. In the 48th minute referee Jaccottet sent off Dani Fernández for a second yellow. The defender lost the ball in the middle and pulled back Macedo. Foul, yellow and early bath.
Ramis’ charges were knocked sideways by the expulsion and Porto took advantage. Just three minutes later Leonardo has the ball in the back of the net, but the referee ruled it out for offside (which it wasn’t – Lienhart had played him on). Madrid slowly got back into the match and Borja Mayoral was in the running to be a hero. He left Verdasca and Johansen on the deck to score with his left, past a passive Gudino, who only shone in the shoot-out. It was the 60th minute and Madrid would look to hold their lead.
Porto hardly created any danger until the 77th minute, when Molina knocked over Ribeiro in the box. A clear penalty that Jaccottet gave. Leonardo sent it right, but Oliveros saved to prevent the equaliser. The ball went for a corner and led to the match’s most incredible moment. Ribeiro faced up to Quezada and the ball went out over the bye-line. The Madrid defender picked the ball up to give it to the keeper and the referee blew for a penalty, to the bemusement of everyone. Leonardo took this one and Oliveros couldn’t do anything. The match went to penalties, the Dragons scored three from three and Madrid were out. Porto go into the quarter finals.
