Champions League: 3 Spanish teams left but no English

Barça brushed City away as was anticipated and are into the next round. So we have eight teams left in the tournament, three Spanish sides but no English representatives. A good argument for when the best league in the world debate comes up. In many aspects, however, organization, kick-off times, full stadiums. marketing and the more competitive games in most cases, the Premier is the best. But when the take to the European stage to compete, La Liga carries more weight. Madrid, Barça and Atlético are in the quarter finals along with two French clubs, one German team, one Italian side and one Portuguese representative. Spain was already ahead in the UEFA ranking, now even more.

Last night’s game at the Camp Nou showcased a fine performance from Messi, especially in the first half. He had two belters in the second half that were well stopped by Joe Hart, who had an inspired night apart from the one goal. City pushed forward in the second period and had the chance to worry the Camp Nou crowd with a penalty that could have made things 1-1 with time remaining. Agüero missed the spot kick with a poor effort that was saved by Ter Stegen, who made up for his previous error conceding possession and almost giving a goal away for the home side.

Guardiola watched the game from his normal seat, his presence providing a touch of recent nostalgia. Messi is well alert and the visit to the Camp Nou on Sunday will provide that little extra motivation that was absent last night. The game turned out to be an appetizer for what is to come on Sunday, El Clásico. Madrid spent the day training and the entire squad were treated to a seafood lunch paid by Ancelotti. He’s reenforcing his leadership after it has come up for debate recently. This is something that a slap up meal can’t change, but a string of positive results can. Staring with things on Sunday.
