Atleti: Six home games without conceding in Europe

Atlético will cling on to the reliability of the Vicente Calderón to come through their Champions League quarter-final tie against Real Madrid. ‘Cholo’ Simeone, happy to play the first leg on home soil, knows that if his side do not concede a goal they will have plenty of options to progress. The Atleti objective is exactly this. Atlético have not conceded a goal at home in the Champions League since March 11 last year when they faced Milan. Kaka scored that day but since then Atleti have not conceded a goal in the six games that have followed in the competition at home. Milan still lost 4-1 despite that Kaka goal and after that Barcelona lost 1-0 in the next round and Chelsea left with a 0-0 draw.

This year Atlético did not concede a goal in any of their three group games at home. Juventus (1-0), Malmo (5-0) and Olympiacos (5-0) all left without points and without a goal. In the last round Atleti came from a 1-0 deficit in the first leg against Bayer Leverkusen and also won 1-0 on home soil before progressing on penalties. In all, Atleti have gone over a year and six games without conceding a goal at home in the Champions League. Barcelona, Chelsea, Juventus, Malmo, Bayer Leverkusen and Olympiacos. Simeone’s men know that if they can repeat that against Real Madrid then their chances of reaching the semi-finals will be much greater.
