Today sees the 260th derby. Atlético and Real Madrid have met on 259 occasions in six different official competitions (156 league matches, 42 Cup games, twice in the Spanish Super Cup, four times in the League Cup, 51 times in Regional tournaments and four times in the European Cup). The overall balance is: 66 Atleti wins, 135 Madrid victories and 58 draws. These 259 games have produced a total of 787 goals: 336 for the team from the Manzanares river and 451 for the Chamartin based team.
European games. This tie will see the fifth and sixth meeting of the Madrid giants in European competition. The Madrid derby will surpass the Milan derby as the most repeated local derby in the history of European football. Both AC Milan and Internazionale have faced each other on four occasions in UEFA competition, whilst Barcelona-Espanyol, Chelsea-Arsenal, Rapid-Steaua and Betis-Sevilla derbies have been dispute don two occasions in European competitions.
Simeone-Ancelotti. They have faced each other just once in the Champions League, last season’s final in Lisbon, where Madrid won the competition 4-1 after a period of extra time. Since that date, the Argentinean coach has not been beaten by the Italian, with an impressive four wins and two draws for his team in their particular head-to-heads.
