Ancelotti raised a smile at his press conference after the match against Eibar: “All the squad will be available for Atlético.” He has good reason: it is the first time this season that he will be able to count on all 23 players in his first-team squad. Yesterday, Sunday, Bale, Khedira and Coentrao all returned to training and will be available for selection at the Calderón. It will be a very difficult situation to when Madrid face Atleti in the league last time out, when they went down 4-0. Regular starters Pepe, Ramos, Marcelo, Modric and James were all missing for that clash.
This season injuries have hit the squad throughout. Jesé was absent from the first half of the campaign and when he returned (December 2 against Cornellà), Modric was in the treatment room after suffering an injury on international duty. The return of the Croatian (against Schalke on March 10) coincided with the foot injury suffered by James. The Colombian returned against Granada on April 5 but Pepe was absent with his third injury of the season. The centre-back returned against Eibar at the weekend in a match where Ancelotti was without Bale, James and Kroos (the latter two through suspension). To these we can add the problems Ramos suffered (missing seven games) and Bale (for five games). Khedira and Coentrao have suffered various set-backs throughout the campaign. In fact, only Casillas, Keylor Navas, Nacho, Kroos, Marcelo and Chicharito have been healthy throughout the season.
With everyone available, Ancelotti will field his strongest eleven to face Atleti. It will be the second time this season he has been able to field this team. The other time was against Athletic at the Bernabéu and it resulted in a 5-0 win.
