Koke, confident ahead of derby: “We’re looking strong”

Atlético de Madrid midfielder Jorge Resurrección ‘Koke’ declared today that representing the Rojiblancos fills him with pride, and especially when the capital derby comes around.

“For me as a player, derby day is something which really gets me fired up; I always used to play derbies with my friends when I was younger – it was always Atleti versus Madrid. I feel very proud now that I can experience it as a player, and representing Atlético. I’m honoured to be able to defend the red and white shirt on derby day,” Koke explained in an interview with fans on the club’s Facebook page.

Koke says that Atlético “are looking strong” going into Saturday’s clash at the Bernabéu but as ever, they will taking each game as it comes. “It’s going to be difficult to repeat the success of last season but we are just as excited and determined now as we were then and now we have the challenge of trying to go one better,” he continued. “Being a footballer, aside from doing what you love, gives you the chance to make other people happy – that’s one of the things I enjoy most about my job, especially seeing the kids happy when we sign an autograph or pose for a photograph with them”.

The player singled out team mate Gabi as the man who most embodies what it means to be an Atlético. “He’s the captain and he came through the youth teams. He represents all of the club’s values and for me, he is my main figure of reference. I get along really well with everyone at the club; we’ve got such a great group of players here. We’re almost like a family and even the most recent arrivals have all been welcomed in and are settled,” he ended.
