Athletic Club’s new San Mamés stadium received glowing reports in the assessment of all the 19 candidates to host EURO 2020 which UEFA published today. European football’s governing body is satisfied that the Bilbao-based venue, which is now fully functioning, complies with all of the basic requisites on their list. The only part of the stadium which has yet to be completed is the VIP lounge which is scheduled to be finished by March 2015.
Athletic’s stadium will compete with 18 other venues to host EURO 2020, the 13 host cities will be elected in Geneva on September 19 .
UEFA were particularly impressed by a number of the features of new San Mamés: the stadium’s easy accessibility, seating, changing rooms and the medical room as well as the zone reserved for anti-doping controls.
There was just one negative comment, UEFA were not entirely convinced by the club’s emergency plans should the stadium need to be evacuated. Inspectors also felt that the media zone for journalists, radio and television was too small. It must be noted that Athletic have amplified the press zone, adding an extra row for journalists after qualifying for this season’s Champions League. Another moot point for UEFA concerns the existing transport links and international access to Bilbao itself from Loiu and Vitoria airports as well as a shortage of hotels in close proximity to the stadium. The Vizcaya regional government meanwhile has announced its decision to request that new San Mamés should stage the Copa del Rey final and the final of the Europa League.
