Roy Keane: "I did not sign for Madrid and now I regret it"

The legendary former Manchester United player Roy Keane has said in his second autobiography that he regrets not having joined Real Madrid in 2005. He said that he had the opportunity to, but eventually “the fear of the unknown” saw him turn the chance down.

Emilio Butragueño called me and said: "Roy, we’d love to have you with us, the club just has to sanction the deal”. Back then, Real Madrid did not have a settled midfield. Graveson and Pablo Garcia did not seem sufficient for the season that was about to start and Keane would have arrived on a free transfer.

The Irishman did not accept the offer in the end. “I should have appreciated Real's offer more. It was the most attractive challenge in front of me but I didn't accept it. In hindsight, I should have said to myself: 'Go, go to Spain, live there for a year and a half, learn the language, learn the culture. I took a negative approach. The weather and the training might have given me another lease of life, another two years of playing. As much as anything else, it was fear that decided me - fear of the unknown.” The former midfielder ended his playing career at Celtic.
